“At least she’s a clean, organized, and neat narcissist.” This is Tristan as he’s packing up her dishes, and it’s easy to discern what’s hers. It’s practically everything that she took from our house when we separated.

“Now, that’s fucking funny. True, but funny, still the same.”

“By chance, has Ax mentioned if they found the SOB?” Tristan’s question hangs in the air.

I pull out the junk drawer—everyone has one—and even this happens to be organized, a couple notes folded along with a picture of Sheila and a guy. The back has two names on it, with a date of just last week. “Sheila and Pete.”

“What was the name of the guy who attacked her?” I ask as the picture is dated two weeks ago.

“Pete Sandusky.”

“Look at this picture and the date. They look rather happy. Sheila never looked at me in that way. I was her meal ticket, but there’s happiness in her eyes.” I pause at what I’m thinking. “This doesn’t feel right.”

Maybe it’s my years in the military as special ops, but still, I have a funny feeling.

I continue through the junk drawer, and Tristan takes the picture from me, examining it.

Three notes are folded in fourths, into a perfect square. One is past dates and cities, another has future dates and cities, and another is simple writing.

I can’t believe I’ve found the one perfect person that was made for me. We’ll be stronger on the other side.

I will always love you.

Pete

Tristan peers over my shoulder as the three notes are folded out. “Those are the dates and cities we just played in, down to the times of the games.”

Fuck, something sure as hell doesn’t feel right about all of this. My phone is in on the counter near me. Switching it to the camera function, I take a picture of all three, along with the portrait of Sheila and Pete.

“Told you it didn’t feel right.”

Tristan is still staring at the notes, and I begin to fold them. Putting them in a box with all the other miscellaneous items.

“Not a word to Ax until we know more.”
